ResponseAgility™: From Margaret to Magi: Why Awareness Is A Superpower for Women’s Leadership

There are two names I answer to. Margaret Graziano — the name I was given, rooted in strength, resilience, and a deep lineage of women who had to figure out how to make it in a world not always designed for them. And Magi — the name that found me later in life. The name that represents ease, presence, and the truth of who I am beneath all the striving. For much of my life, I lived as Margaret. Driven. Capable. Focused on proving that I belonged.

What I didn’t realize at the time was this: Much of that drive wasn’t coming from vision. It was coming from conditioning. And this is something I see over and over again in my work in executive coaching for women and in the broader evolution of women’s leadership.

The Invisible Weight Women Carry

Women leaders today are navigating a level of complexity that is unprecedented. They are:

  • Leading teams.
  • Driving results.
  • Managing careers.
  • Supporting families.

And often, carrying the majority of responsibility at home, whether acknowledged or not.

Along with that comes something more subtle, but just as powerful: Guilt. Pressure. The need to prove. Even at the highest levels, many women feel they must:

  • Work harder.
  • Perform better.
  • Anticipate more.
  • Do more.

And biologically, many women operate with what I call diffuse awareness: the ability to focus while simultaneously scanning everything happening around them. It’s a gift. And it’s also exhausting.

This is one of the core patterns we address in executive coaching for women and in advancing sustainable women’s leadership. Not by removing responsibility, but by changing how women relate to it.

What’s Really Getting in the Way

Most organizations assume stress is caused by external factors:

  • Workload
  • Inefficiency
  • Difficult relationships

But those are only part of the story.

The deeper issue is this: We are not seeing reality clearly. We are seeing reality through a lens that was built long before we entered the workplace. Between the third trimester and about eight years old, we form our beliefs about:

  • Who we are
  • What we’re capable of
  • How the world works

Those beliefs become our default operating system. And here’s the part that changes everything. We don’t know we’re looking through it. So when something happens at work (a missed expectation, a difficult conversation, a moment of uncertainty) we don’t just respond to that moment.

We respond to:

  • The past
  • The meaning we’ve assigned to similar experiences
  • The identity we’ve built around those experiences

It feels real. It feels true. But it’s filtered. This is one of the most important breakthroughs in executive coaching for women and in the development of conscious women’s leadership: helping leaders see that what feels like reality is often a projection of the past.

The Shift from Reaction to Awareness

When we are unaware of this pattern, we operate below what I call the power and freedom line.

In this state:

  • We react
  • We defend
  • We protect
  • We narrow our perspective

Stress hormones take over. Clarity disappears. Performance drops. But when awareness comes online, something shifts. We begin to see:

  • Our thoughts as thoughts
  • Our reactions as patterns
  • Our emotions as signals, not truth

And in that moment, we have a choice.

This is where real leadership begins. Not in controlling others, but in understanding ourselves. And this is the foundation of elevated women’s leadership.

From Effort to Alignment

Many high-performing women have been taught to succeed through effort. Push harder. Work longer. Prove more. But effort alone has limits. Sustainable performance (and sustainable women’s leadership) comes from alignment. Alignment of:

  • Mind
  • Body
  • Emotion
  • Intention

When women learn to access this alignment, something powerful happens:

  • Decision-making becomes clearer
  • Communication becomes more effective
  • Energy becomes more sustainable

This is a central focus in executive coaching for women. Not adding more to do, but removing what is in the way.

Final Thought: Margaret and Magi

Margaret will always be part of me. The strength. The resilience. The drive. And Magi is the part of me that knows. I don’t have to prove. I don’t have to push. I don’t have to carry everything. Because beneath the conditioning… beneath the beliefs… beneath the past…There is a natural state available to all of us:

Clarity. Peace. Power.

And when we learn to access that, especially in women’s leadership, everything changes.

If you’re ready to lead from clarity instead of pressure, to move from reaction to awareness, and to step fully into the next level of your leadership, this is your invitation.
